H&S CareChild Care, Learning and Development, involves looking after children of all ages. Creches, playgroups, nurseries, out of school childcare and holiday clubs need to be staffed by trained carers. You could also work as a nanny or childminder. You'll need to like children and be very patient and understanding. The hours may be long - at work early in the morning and up to six or seven o'clock at night. Health, Social Care and Nursing involves caring for sick and elderly, or people with disabilities. You will normally work in a day care centre or residential home. This will be run privately or by the local authority. You will need to carry out a wide range of duties, some of which will be unpleasant. You'll also need to understand about medicines and treatment of illnesses. As an Apprentice you need to be physically fit as well. Public services, including working in local government and for national organisations, is very varied with a wide range of employment opportunities in sectors such as social care and housing.

  • Health (Dental Nursing)

    A dental nurse provides ‘chair-side support’ for the dental team, which includes dentists, dental therapists, hygienists and technicians.

    The role of a dental nurse is regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC). An individual may be able to register with the GDC upon satisfactory completion of a recognised qualification, which includes the L3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (QCF).

    The average duration for completion of an Advanced Level Apprenticeship is 18 months.

    This Apprenticeship is for anyone interested in working in a laboratory setting. Laboratory technicians support scientists and help carry out tests, research and investigations. They work across many industries and can be involved in activities ranging from developing new products and diagnosing diseases to measuring pollution levels.

     

    As an apprentice, you’ll train as a junior laboratory technician and learn practical scientific skills. The nature of your work will depend on your employer, but whether you work for a pharmaceutical company or a university, you’ll probably be part of a team of other scientists and technicians. You might help collect and analyse samples; prepare cultures or specimens; set up experiments; and record and present data. You might also be responsible for ordering and controlling laboratory stock and supplies, and making sure laboratory equipment is clean and in good working order.

     

    During your Apprenticeship you’ll learn about the fundamentals of science, pick up practical skills and take a qualification in applied science.

    Completion of the Advanced Level Apprenticeship could lead to further qualifications or Higher Education. Once qualified, you might find yourself working in a research laboratory, hospital laboratory, environmental science laboratory, or laboratory within an educational establishment.

    The security industry is experiencing steady growth. Currently, there are around 500,000 people employed in the security industry – that includes static and patrol guards, uniformed retail security guards, store detectives, CCTV operators, dog handlers and private investigators. Large commercial companies, hospitals and universities also contribute to that number with their own in-house security teams.

     

    On this Apprenticeship, there are several pathways that cover the following sub-sectors: static and patrol guarding, events security, door supervision, retail security, reception duties, and CCTV operation. For this job, you’ll need a calm head to assess different situations and the confidence to act when necessary. At the same time, you’ll learn the importance of keeping accurate records and handling key documents.

  • Security Systems

    This Apprenticeship covers the installation and maintenance of a range of security, fire and emergency systems. As the security systems industry becomes more complex, the need for highly skilled engineers grows. Security and fire systems installers fit and service electronic systems that detect intruders and fire, and control access to buildings or sites electronically.

     

    On this Apprenticeship, you could be installing fire or security systems and rigging them to control panels; testing systems; explaining to customers how to use the system; and repairing faulty systems. You’ll probably be working with technologies like wire-free system links or infrared and fibre optics – you could even learn to fit complex arrangements like CCTV and integrated systems.

  • Children and Young Peoples Workforce

    This Apprenticeship is for people who work with children – from birth to 16-year-olds (and their families) – in settings or services whose main purpose is children’s care, learning and development. Workers in this area make sure children are looked after, kept active, happy and nourished. They also help children develop social and practical skills.

    This Apprenticeship gives people a fulfilling opportunity to work with children and young people while also gaining an understanding into the hows and whys of their development. Equally, it ensures candidates put childcare theory into practice. As an apprentice, the exact nature of your job role will depend on your employer. The Intermediate Level Apprenticeship is for those working under supervision such as a nursery assistant or playgroup assistant working with children under five or an assistant playworker in an out of school setting.

    The Advanced Level Apprenticeship is for those who work on their own initiative, planning and organising their own work and/or supervising others, for example, a nursery nurse, playgroup leader or a childminder working in their own home. After successful completion of this Apprenticeship there’s good scope for progression. You may move up through levels of work, for example, from nursery assistant to nursery manager. There are also opportunities to undertake further training or assessment.

    This Apprenticeship covers a wide range of job roles in the health care and social care fields. The NHS, private sector, local authorities and the armed forces all employ apprentices. As an apprentice in Health Care, you could work in hospitals, the community, doctors’ surgeries, hospices, private clinics or opticians. You could be supporting doctors or nurses in clinical roles or helping patients in hospital wards or their homes – serving food, making and changing beds and so on.

     There are 21 separate qualifications available within the Health Care Apprenticeship ranging from maternity to radiotherapy support. Social care is about helping people with a particular need, such as the disabled or the elderly. This type of care usually takes place in the home or in care homes, and can include anything from helping people get dressed to transporting them to and from a residential home.

    As an apprentice in Social Care, you could be a personal care assistant helping someone in their everyday life. Completion of the Advanced Level Apprenticeship will stand you in good stead for progression onto Higher Education in subjects like nursing or midwifery and operating department practitioner roles in the care sector or management roles in Care homes.
