Jobs in this industry can range from Retail Assistant to Store Management and involve dealing with cash, credit cards and stock control. The recent changes in the retail industry include the development of regional shopping centres and buying on the internet. Shopping is now the UK's number one leisure time activity and the sector is forecast to grow even further. In Wholesale, Distribution, Warehousing and Storage, you could be working in a warehouse, delivering goods to customers, controlling large machinery for storage or in stock control. This industry is continuously changing with improved working conditions and increased use of technology. An Apprenticeship is the best way to keep up to date with these changes.

For Beauty this could be offering a range of treatments such as massage, manicure or tanning. There are a lot of techniques and skills to learn and these will need to be practised before you can try them out on full paying customers. If you choose to entrer this line of work, you need to be friendly, confident and tactful. It is also likely you will be using a lot of different care products and chemicals so you must not suffer from allergies or skin conditions.

In Hospitality and Catering, opportunities exist for all sorts of people, in all sorts of jobs. As an Apprentice you could be working in a restaurant, pub, fast food outlet or hotel. Contract catering in hospitals, staff restaurants and schools is another area. Finally, there are opportunities in entertaining and hospitality where you can work at a location or event. All these jobs involve working with the public, so you'll need to be a "people" person. Hospitality can involve long and unsociable hours.

  • Logistics Operations

The ultimate goal of any logistics operation is to move a product from supplier to customer – this path is called the supply chain, and it needs to keep moving in order for goods to arrive at the right place, at the right time. Logistics managers play an important role in all of this, liaising with a range of people including suppliers, manufacturers, retailers and consumers.

On this Advanced Level Apprenticeship, you’ll hold a management role for a logistics company. As an apprentice, your duties may involve transportation, stock control, warehousing, and/or monitoring the flow of goods and materials. You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day running of things and making sure that quality, cost and efficiency of the supply chain meets standards.

You’ll learn a range of skills, which could include monitoring stock and keep records; managing the receipt, storage or dispatch of goods; developing relationships with customers and suppliers; and providing leadership for your team.

For this role, you’ll need strong organisation skills and a flair for leadership. You’ll also need to be able to think on your feet and make quick decisions. This is an Advanced Apprenticeship, so a Level 2 qualification in a Logistics occupation or equivalent experience is essential.

They might even take charge of a large-scale clean-up, like on a festival site. They also need to have the right customer care skills as cleaners are often in contact with customers.

  • Hospitality and Catering

This Apprenticeship covers a range of occupations within hospitality and catering, one of the largest industries in the country. Hospitality and catering covers work in restaurants, hotels and holiday accommodation, cafés, pubs, and contract caterers – it also supplies other industries with food and drink. Schools, colleges, hospitals and large businesses nearly always have canteens and catering staff, too.

To reflect the many career options on offer, this Apprenticeship has several pathways. If you’re interested in working 'front of house', you could train as waiting staff and learn how to serve customers, or train in drinks service – one of the fastest growing sub-sectors.

You could work in all sorts of kitchens, from fine-dining to chain restaurants through to gastro-pubs. There are specialist pathways to cover all kinds of fare, including Bangladeshi, Thai, Chinese, and Indian. Apprentices more interested in the hospitality side of the sector could work in a hotel reception area; learn to run a B&B or youth hostel; or keep a hotel crisp and clean.

  • Mail and Package Distribution

This Apprenticeship deals with the collection, processing and delivery of mail. Mail services accounts for roughly 9% of the total workforce within the Logistics industry. While Royal Mail is the largest employer (with more than 200,000 employees), there are many other specialist mail service providers as well.

In fact, some organisations, such as local authorities and health trusts, rely on their own internal postal system. On this Apprenticeship, you could be driving a van to collect and distribute post; sorting letters in a mail processing centre; or out delivering the post, by foot, bicycle, motorcycle or light van. You’ll learn skills like how to plan routes, how to handle and sort post, and how to process mail using automated systems.

There are also opportunities to become a manager or supervisor at various stages of the process, whether it’s in the sorting office or keeping tabs on a fleet of vehicles. You may need to work anti-social hours in this industry, so you'll need to be punctual and reliable; but it's an important service with plenty of job satisfaction.

On the Advanced Level Apprenticeship, you could work as a nail technician or even a session and photographic nail artist. You’ll have the opportunity to develop specialist skills in creative nail work by planning, designing and creating images for nail art – you may even get involved with photoshoots or competitions. You’ll also learn how to maintain and repair a range of artificial nail systems.

  • Retail

Retail covers a host of businesses from market stalls and independent shops to national chains and large superstores. This Apprenticeship covers a range of skills that can be used across this vast sector.

As an Intermediate Level Apprentice, your role will depend on your employer – you could be assisting customers on the sales floor of a high street store or handling their purchases. Alternatively, you could be working in a specialist department and become a product expert able to help with specific queries. An artistic flare could point you in the direction of visual merchandising, helping to create window and in-store displays. Or you could work behind the scenes in stock handling, ensuring products are received in the correct quantities and appropriately stored.

On the Advanced Level Apprenticeship, your training will focus on a more specific role to gain greater skills in your preferred specialty. You will handle more responsibility and gain important management skills. From organising displays to learning the crucial aspects of management, the skills gained from the Retail Apprenticeship are transferable to all retail companies. • Service Enterprises (Hairdressing, Barbering & Beauty Therapy)

    Hairdressing / Barbering

This Apprenticeship covers all the basics of hairdressing. As a Hairdressing apprentice, you’ll work as a salon junior, assisting senior staff while training as a junior stylist. Duties are likely to include booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair, and mixing and applying hair colouring.

You’ll study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection – there’s also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, or relaxing different types of hair. Advanced Level Apprentices take their learning a step further by developing their cutting and colouring skills so they can carry out all the latest fashion techniques – and maybe even determine the fashion looks of the future.

On this Apprenticeship you’ll spend a lot of time on your feet, and it’s important that you look smart (and have an even better hairstyle). Good communication plays a role, too – you’ll need to understand exactly what your customer wants in order to make them happy.

    Beauty Therapy

This Apprenticeship is about improving people’s wellbeing by making them look and feel better. Beauty Therapy covers a range of treatments, from simple facials and make-up jobs to waxing. As a Beauty Therapy Intermediate Level Apprentice, you’ll assist senior therapists and learn a range of skills and techniques, such as how to improve facial skin conditions, wax body hair, spray tan, shape and colour brows, perform hand and foot treatments, and apply make-up.

On the Advanced Level Apprenticeship, you’ll work as a beauty therapist, learning techniques like body massage as well as more complicated electronic treatments to remove unwanted hair or improve skin condition. You’ll work closely with clients and will need the ability to put them at ease, and generally be pleasant and personable.

Most therapists are based in salons, although some can work in hospitals, resorts, and even cruise liners. It can be a glamorous career choice: with further training you might become a make-up artist for film and TV, or help develop new products. In the future you might run your own salon, or work for individual clients. After successful completion of an Apprenticeship, you could go on to study specialist areas like massage, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy or reflexology

  • Warehousing and Storage

This Apprenticeship deals with the movement and storage of goods, and is an essential part of logistics operations. However, there’s more to this job than just lifting and moving things around (although it does involve a fair bit of that, so you’ll need to be fit and learn how to lift things properly).

As a Warehousing and Storage apprentice, you might learn skills in operating specialist machinery to get things onto – and down from – high storage spaces; learn about keeping some goods at low temperatures; and improve your spatial awareness, so that you can quickly and efficiently load objects of different shapes and sizes. Your duties will depend on your employer, but you could manage stock; audit inventory; keep equipment in good working order; process returned goods; or manage the receipt, storage and dispatch of goods. You might even learn how to maintain the safety of hazardous goods and materials.

Good teamwork is important when you’re working to a tight schedule, such as loading or unloading a lorry that can only wait for a little while before it needs to go on to the next job. You’ll also learn how to maintain health and safety, and work towards a certificate in Logistics and Transport.
